LIFE AFTER SPORT
The athletes we have worked with over the years have told us how daunting the thought of life after sport can be, both in terms of figuring out what’s the best next move as well as the emotional rollercoaster the journey has taken them on along with their families.
LIFE AFTER SPORT realise your path has started at a unique level, therefore offer you easy & discreet access to a similarly unique next chapter we've found many ex-athletes (or any sport professional) prefer to thrive into having the capability to explore their full range of options many of which clients aren't even aware exist.
Transition happens to us all in life to various extents and we'd liken that of an athlete as similar to a member of the armed forces returning to society after active duty. There are usually unseen wounds as well as the probability of physical ones which you'll relate to.
In the real world, year after year the phrase often heard in sport commentary "at 28 or 29 they're coming to the end of their career" is inevitable for any athlete, but completely alien to the majority of people. Household names will usually have acquired enough income to sustain and build for life after sport, many more that aren't so well known may not, however from our experience, common themes reoccur to show us that an athlete's:
STRUCTURE falls away and has to be rebuilt new
PHYSICAL CHANGES = Emotional changes
MEDIA ATTENTION often disappears abruptly
IDENTITY built up over years often becomes disillusioned
RELATIONSHIP to and treatment from the public typically changes
UNDERSTANDING of roles in a relationship is hugely affected
RESULTANT THREATS:
Loss of identity leads to self-doubt
Physical imbalance leads to low levels of energy
Dealing with stress hormones may lead to an adverse outcome
The release of deep muscle tension enables the perception of unfamiliar and long time repressed feelings
Numbing mechanisms are developed
REALITY BITES AND AFFECTS EVERYONE DIFFERENTLY. Admitting to being scared and fearful is hardly discussed and still taboo during his crucial time despite the welcomed openness to mental health. With our professional and discreet service this is now more accessible for you anytime you feel the need.
Short careers and often limited earning potential make post-competition career planning essential for all athletes, although finding the time to broach the subject can be challenging as the video below highlighting Michael Phelps as the most successful Olympian of all time (with 28 medals) makes clear for even those who have reached the ultimate sporting summit.
LIFE AFTER SPORT offers you deeper exploration than just a job an employer would have for you, to uncover other potential and supports you discover insights to reassign your identity, then control where your new focus should be. I knew I wanted to stay in the football industry after my playing career, but how? What jobs are available for ex-players? What would I be good at? Where do I start?
I had all these questions in my mind and your platform helped me answer most of them in a very comprehensive way! I encourage all footballers to think about their future and do the wider relevant LIFE AFTER SPORT programmes to help them in this phase of their life.

LIFE AFTER SPORT was a great experience for me because preparing for after hanging the gloves up is something that needs support and planning. I know I would have benefitted from more guidance at the time but it wasn't there.
Fortunately, my introduction to LIFE AFTER SPORT wasn't too late well after retirement when I was referred to them and their programme helped me discover new options I hadn't considered and provide the confidence to develop what I already had in mind.
Besides, it was fantastic to interact with my mentor who knew the process and could give me great advice and motivation as previously there was little structure available for me in figuring out what was next.

Former British & Commonwealth Heavyweight Champion
As a player, I gained experience on the pitch, in the dressing room and in the stadium. I saw football from a wide range of perspectives and learned how to harness the skills of leadership, motivation and teamwork to build a successful career on the pitch.
But before I retired, I need to understand how to use these skills to find the right role for my future. I realised the importance of working with mentors and developing my business knowledge to secure my future preference. LIFE AFTER SPORT will offer you a pathway to the next stage of your life, and with the support of their mentors you will better understand where you see your future.
